Job Description

Own every machine on the property

West Texas Aggregates is hiring a Fleet Maintenance Manager at our sand and gravel operation in Matador, Texas. We run wheel loaders, excavators, and the support vehicles that keep a pit moving. Right now maintenance happens because somebody notices. We want it to happen because somebody planned it, and we want that somebody to be you. This is the seat where you build the maintenance program for this site and then run it.

Be straight with yourself about this job first This is a working manager role. Today the crew is you.

You will turn the wrenches. You will do the services. You will be under a loader on a hot afternoon with nobody handing you tools. We are not going to dress that up, because the wrong hire here is someone who wanted a clipboard and a desk.

What makes it a manager's job is that nobody is telling you what to service or when. You decide. You build the schedule, you set the intervals, you order the parts, you keep the records, and you own whether this fleet is available tomorrow morning. That is a real mandate and most shops never hand it to anybody.

And it is not a crew of one forever.

We are growing fast, and we are adding equipment and shifts. The maintenance function grows with it. The person in this seat is the person who gets help first, then hires and leads it. If you want to build a shop from nothing and run it, this is that job.

What you will be responsible for:

The equipment

  • Wheel loaders and excavators
  • Support vehicles: water truck, service truck, pickups
  • Ground engaging tools, cutting edges, bucket teeth, tires, and everything else that wears out in an abrasive pit
  • Our haul trucks are contract haulers, not ours. This is a yellow iron seat, not an over-the-road fleet.

The work

  • Build and run a preventive maintenance program: service intervals by hour meter, fluid and filter schedules, oil sampling, and a record of what was actually done
  • Daily and weekly inspection routines, including teaching operators to do a real walkaround instead of a glance
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulics, electrical systems, drivetrain, undercarriage, brakes, cooling, and air conditioning
  • Welding and fabrication for repairs, guards, wear plate, and whatever the pit needs made
  • Keep an accurate asset and service record on every machine: hours, service history, repairs, costs
  • Manage parts. Decide what is worth stocking on a site ninety minutes from Lubbock and what can wait on a delivery.
  • Manage dealer and vendor relationships, warranty claims, and outside service calls
  • Make the call on what you repair in-house, what goes to a dealer, and when a machine is costing more to keep than to replace, then bring us the numbers
  • Keep the whole fleet MSHA compliant and safe to put an operator on

What we are looking for:

  • Heavy equipment mechanic experience. Loaders, excavators, dozers, or comparable off-road iron. Cat, Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, Case, Hitachi, whatever you have worked on.
  • Strong hydraulic and electrical diagnostic ability. On this site you are the diagnostic capability, so being able to read a schematic and trace a fault matters more than being able to swap a known part.
  • Welding and fabrication skill
  • Enough organization to run a PM schedule and keep records that mean something six months later. You do not need to love paperwork. You do need to do it.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and in the field, because a machine that goes down in the pit does not come to a shop
  • Judgment about cost. We want someone who thinks about what a repair costs against what the machine earns.
  • Prior MSHA or aggregate experience is a plus but not required. We are Part 46 compliant and we train.

Adjacent backgrounds we welcome:

Heavy equipment field service techs, dealer techs from a Cat or Deere or Komatsu shop, oilfield or agricultural equipment mechanics, diesel mechanics with real hydraulic experience, and shop foremen ready to build something of their own.

What we pay and what we cover: $34.00 to $42.00 per hour.

Where you land in that range depends on what you can diagnose and repair without help, and we figure that out fast.

This is hourly with overtime, not a salary, and that is deliberate. A salaried title would look tidier on paper and pay you less. At $38.00 an hour with ten hours of overtime in a week, this seat clears roughly $98,000 a year. We would rather you have that than a title. We know what a mechanic makes in Midland and Odessa. We are not going to pretend we beat the top of the oilfield on raw hourly rate. What we have instead is work that does not disappear when the rig count drops, a program you own instead of a queue somebody else fills, and a place to park your RV on day one.

Your MSHA training is on us. West Texas Aggregates is MSHA Part 46 compliant. If you have never worked on a mine site, that is fine. We pay for your new miner training, you get trained before you work on your own, and you get annual refresher training after that. It is a real certification that stays with you for the rest of your career in this industry. Overtime is available, and we are moving into multiple shifts.

Where you will work, and where you can live:

350 State Highway 70, Matador, TX 79244. About 30 minutes from Turkey and an hour and a half from Lubbock. This is a rural site. We would rather you know that up front than find out on day one.

Housing around Matador is limited, and we are straight with people about that.

  • Have an RV? We have a spot on site with a hookup. You can live right here. For someone relocating for this job, it is the simplest answer.
  • Coming in from a neighboring town? Plenty of our people do. That works fine.
  • Something else in mind? Talk to us. Living arrangements are negotiable and we would rather solve it than lose a good hand over it.

Where this goes:

  • A crew. As we add equipment and shifts, this function grows and you lead it.
  • The whole site's mechanical program. We also run a Terex AggreSand 206 wash plant with its own technician. How maintenance works across the plant and the fleet is not settled, and the person in this seat will have a lot to say about it.
  • Standards. We are defining what fleet health looks like across our operations, including GPS and telematics on rolling stock. If you want to be part of setting that rather than receiving it, you are early enough.

We are early. Being an early hire at a growing operation is worth something, and here it actually is.

How to apply:

Tell us what equipment you have worked on, what the hardest thing you ever diagnosed was and how you found it, and whether you have ever built a PM program from scratch or run one somebody else built. No formal resume required. The basics are fine and we will call you.

West Texas Aggregates is an equal opportunity employer. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or genetic information.

\nCompany Description

West Texas Aggregates is a surface sand and gravel operation in Motley County,
Texas, producing washed sand and #57 stone for construction and infrastructure
work.
We built this operation from the ground up. Wheel loaders and excavators feed a
Terex AggreSand 206 wash plant that screens, washes, and separates material
under automated touchscreen control, and loads are ticketed on an iPad. We are
adding production, adding shifts, and adding people, and new shifts get filled
from inside first.
Safety is a condition of the job, not a poster in the break room. We are MSHA
Part 46 compliant and we pay for new miner training and annual refreshers. From
there we cross-train people across loaders, excavators, plant operation, and
mechanical work, and we cover FAA Part 107 certification for drone stockpile
surveys.
